Some information about my new newsletter coming up just as soon as I yell “HIEROGLYPH!”…
Hey, remember What’s Alan Watching? No, not the unsold Eddie Murphy-produced, Tommy Schlamme-directed CBS pilot, but the blog site I used to do, and then for a long time the title of my section over on HitFix (RIP). The Blogspot site still exists, and Uproxx still has all of my material for them and HitFix archived, albeit not as its own hub. (As I often tell people, if you’re looking for something I wrote about a particular show or episode, Google the title and my unusual last name, and you’ll do okay.)
Well, with Twitter in flux under its new management, I am revamping my web presence. I am obviously writing a ton in my job as chief TV critic at Rolling Stone, and you can still find everything I do for them at this link. And I’ll still be on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, along with my attempts to figure out what the heck Mastodon is and how to use it. But I also wanted to make sure that, as various social networks come and go, there would always be an easy way for people to find me and stay updated about what I’m doing and where.
One part of that is an upcoming revamp of AlanSepinwall.com, which I really haven’t used much in the [checks notes] decade since The Revolution Was Televised was first published. It should look really pretty really soon, and have info on all my other books and projects.
The other part is this newsletter. For the moment, I am planning to use it for three things:
Any big announcements, like the one I can’t wait to make soon about a big project I’m working on that has yet to be officially announced;
Regular links (whether weekly, or after each story is published; I’m still figuring that out) to the stuff I write, in case you’re not as much on social media and/or don’t want to check Rolling Stone every day; and
Perhaps some brief thoughts on TV I’m watching but not necessarily writing full articles about. Like, if my thoughts have evolved a bit on a show I already reviewed (say, Andor, which I am enjoying a lot more now even though I still find the title character kinda dull despite Diego Luna’s best efforts), or if I caught an interesting episode of something, or just had a dumb thought about a development in the TV business. Basically, what I already do on Twitter and elsewhere, but in one collected, probably weekly form.
Again, lots to figure out and perfect, but I also wanted to get this started before the ground shifts beneath my virtual feet, you know? The plan is for this to begin as, and remain, a free newsletter — a small supplement to what I do in my day job and my side projects, and mainly just a way for anybody who wants to follow me to do it at any and all times. If people wind up wanting lots of updates, or fewer, we can figure that out down the road, and I’m always happy for feedback, whether here or by emailing me over at Rolling Stone.
So I hope you’ll sign on as I work out the kinks, slap some new digital paint on my personal site, and wait for whatever happens next for those of us who are very online.
This is great news! I still go back to your Wire reviews whenever I rewatch. Having your new work on newsletter format like this is ideal.
Have missed your commentary since the days of Firewall/Iceberg. Glad to get it in my inbox!
