Thank you so much for pushing We Are Lady Parts. I've finally come around to watching the whole series over the last two days. I absolutely adore it and am telling everyone I know to watch it now 💜
The Sympathizer has a lot to admire and a lot to like but it was a really demanding watch for me. I think his previous mini-series, Little Drummer Girl, set me up to expect something more straight-forward and less arch. Instead, The Sympathizer is a lot closer to Park Chan-Wook's feature films in tone and style, and in retrospect watching an extended Old Boy or Sympathy for Lady Vengeance for 7 hours would probably not be a fun time.
We’ve been replaying the first season of Lady Parts this week so that our daughters can be up to speed and enjoying it just as much. Delightful show worth a Peacock sub. Glad to hear it continues to rock.
The bundling of DTC offerings was probably inevitable, as were cutbacks in the avalanche of original content and the resumption of licensing stuff to other platforms (in particular Netflix) for cash flow and eyeballs. My biggest peeve by far in the shift from those early, heady days of brand-specific streaming has been the loss of “get all those classic Warner Bros.* properties like the Looney Tunes library in one place” (completely random example, not).
I just started the four-hour Stax/Volt documentary Soulsville, USA that HBO ran last week and is now on Max. Headphones recommended.
Does this puppet require a Battery? Sounds like it might be The Thing That Should Not Be. If Cumberbatch’s character doesn’t watch out, he might spend a second season in a Sanitarium. Hopefully, he finds a more permanent solution to his problems because puppets are just Disposable Heroes.
…and Leper Messiah defeats me. I’m out. Almost made it!
Overall, I thought the Sympathizer was fine. Not great. And the RDJ as many characters was dumb. Would have been perfect if he has just played the director in what I thought was the best episode of the series.

I binged We Are Lady Parts over the course of the past 2 days thanks to your article and it was so good. Will be thinking about it for a while.
Didn't love The Sympathizer as much as I hoped, but that final shot will stick with me.
Regarding Eric: how often did you daydream about Angel’s “Smile Time”?
Honestly? Not at all. The tone here is very different, and this doesn't involve the main character turning into a puppet.
That’s a shame. Who wouldn’t want Benedict Cumberbatch being turned into a wee little puppet man
